With the release of version 3.0 of Android, Google was attacking force dominate a market segment so far by Apple iPad. StyleReport.ro comparing one of the first tablets using the new operating system, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v, with the second generation iPhone, and the results were surprising to both devices.

Tehnical equipment and construction
Let’s start with the two newest gadgets, Galaxy Tab 10.1v, released shortly ago in Romania. The front of the tablet is dominated by multi-touch display of 10.1 inches (25.65 cm). Google and Samsung have opted to give up buttons for Android features so far, instead being used more virtual buttons. The only thing that is present on the border of the tablet is a 2-megapixel webcam, primarily intended for video conferencing.

Tab 10.1v clearly designed to be used in horizontal mode: the screen has a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, and USB jack for connecting to a computer is positioned in the center of one of the long sides of the device. Tab 10.1 includes a set of stereo speakers positioned one side of the screen and on the upper side of the case also found its place a microphone and two buttons for volume control. Right side of the case houses the SIM card slot and left side 3.5 mm connector for headphones and button on/off.

The back is made of textured black plastic, presumably to reduce weight wherever possible device, and has an optimized shape as to have a better grip. A company logo inscribed in a circle and a metallic eight megapixel camera with LED flash are also positioned on the back of the tablet. iPad 2 has a design similar to that of the first model: the front side includes a display of 9.7 inches (24.63 cm) with an aspect ratio of 4:3, to return to the main menu button and a video camera in the top. The display is covered with glass and aluminum.

At the level of technical equipment, both tablets using the latest processors with two cores, supported by 512MB of RAM and 1GB on the iPad Tab 10.1. The only place Galaxy Tab fails to match (or exceed) iPhone in terms of features is the display: iPad screen is significantly clearer and can be viewed from angles much larger than that used by Samsung, despite resolution somewhat smaller (1024 x 728 pixels vs. the iPhone. 1280 × 800 at Tab 10.1v).

In terms of autonomy, iPad two wins, with about 9-10 hours of continuous operation before the end of the battery. Galaxy Tab still manage to provide good performance with a range of 7-8 hours in normal use. Both tablets have refused to charge via USB from the computer to which I linked, a potential problem if you plug adapter with you and you with the battery running out.

It should be mentioned from the beginning another fundamental difference between the two tablets: iPhone is more related to a classical computer than Galaxy Tab. At first startup, called iPad 2 connected to a computer with iTunes installed for initialization and the transfer of content is still based mainly on the timing device with a PC. Tab 10.1va required to boot a Google account, after entering the system that I could find all contacts, mail accounts, and even our photos Picasa albums. It is worth mentioning that the iPhone can be synchronized with a Google account, but if you want a tablet computer as a stand-alone, Apple still not offers a very good solution. Virtual keyboards integrated into IOS and Android 3 have worked very well, but for large texts or emails recommend using a physical keyboard external version supported by both platforms.

Standard applications installed on both operating systems cover almost all the common needs of users: browser, email client, notes, and multimedia software programs for GPS. Both tablets have excellent performance in running applications, but were quite heated during prolonged use. Deserves special attention paid to browsers: like the previous version, iPad 2 does not give users the ability to run Flash content, relying instead on HTML5 standard still lower.

For now, thanks to tens of thousands of applications available and superior stability, we recommend the iPad 2, but this verdict might change once developers are working on Android platform. If we consider the applications available, then the verdict is almost equal for the first time since the emergence of the iPad. However, even when comparing only the basic functions, iPad still offers a more fluid experience.

If the name of iPhone 4S has not convinced you that would be connected with a tribute of Apple to Steve Jobs maybe the launch of iPad 3 on February 24, when Steve Jobs would have celebrated his birthday, would give you to understand that Apple did not forget his famous founder.

Of course it’s just a rumor now that probably was born in the mind of a journalist from Taiwan but that does not mean that this rumour can not be true. Last year iPad 2 was announced on 2 March, a week after the Steve Jobs birthday so, would not be so unusual that this year things happen a little faster, all in the memory of the legendary CEO.

Because it is a new gadget, it is taking time for makers in the supply chain to raise their yield rates. The sources said all OEM and ODM makers have exercised great caution in ensuring the smooth operations of their production lines.

Even if iPad 3 will not be announced then, we see presented to a conference in early Apple in March. iPad 3 could have Retina Display, could be thinner and may come equipped with a quad-core but yet all this information are simple rumors so take them with a large dose of pessimism.

This week was talked about the progress made by Pod2G in the development of untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 5/5.0.1 news now come with us. iPod Touch 4G and Apple TV 2G are now untethered jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1 thanks to exploit discovered by Pod2G and things seem to go in the right direction in the present. iPhone 3GS, iPad, iPad 2 and iPhone 4S are the only devices that have not yet been jailbroken, but assumes that by the end of the week we will see at least some of them compatible with the new solution.

Apple TV 2 4.4.3 untethered. Done also. Rush mode = off for today. Will be able to test in some days, thanks to @firecore that’d ship me an Apple TV 2 for testing ! Thanks mate ! That’s awesome.

Pod2G was based on information published by i0n1c about how iOS can be exploited and now it seems that very soon manages to implement the solution to jailbreak to Apple products. The hope is that Apple to launch iOS 5.1 as soon as the solution to be compatible with this version of the operating system and Pod2G to launch and make millions happy when we hear ad appear.

If you have a portable product of Apple then surely you know that the battery can not be changed by you at home in any way and you have to go to an Apple store or authorized service center to change it or to change the whole device. Many people wondered the reason behind the decision not to change batteries and a patent of Apple offers some explanations in this regard.

Apple patent says that its product design is extremely important and through it users define the experience they have with a product. To provide a pleasant design and a good experience Apple has designed its products to be pleasing to the eye but useful too, and that involves giving up of certain benefits and the ability to change the battery is one of them.

Of course there is also a financial motivation because Apple wins a lot of money from the changes of products whose batteries are not good; customers are forced to pay for repairs and new batteries. The impossibility to open the product has practical reasons for Apple to ensure a certain extent that users will not damage the product when they opened and to not replace the original parts with other non-original. For each of these restrictions there is always an explanation but that of design is not very convincing for me.

Nvidia Tegra 3 is the new quad-core chip that will be implemented in tablets to be launched later this year but next year too. We talk about a chip that should theoretically be the most powerful on the market but not in all respects, as it is shown in the picture above.

The graphics chip from Nvidia Tegra 3 was tested using benchmark GLBenchmark and notice that is weaker than the graphics chip implemented by Apple in iPad 2 and iPhone 4S this year. The difference is very high, even compared to the iPhone 4S, so great that it makes me think that something could be in the middle.

Nvidia Tegra 3 has a graphics chip produced by Nvidia and an A5 chip that has a dual-core GPU PowerVR 543MP2 and results from the above picture demonstrates practical supremacy chip made by Apple. The tests GLBenchmark were made at 1280×720 resolutions with both models of chips and the performance difference could have two explanations: either platform Tegra 3 is indeed weaker or the chip from Tegra 3 is not yet 100% optimized or GLBenchmark not recognize it.

The above results were obtained from Lenovo LePad K2 tablet, a tablet in the process of development so that the results to improve should double to overcome iPad 2. In the process it is clear that a quad-core will be more powerful than a dual-core, now remains to be seen and how much difference will matter in real life.
