Rohan is a realm in J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy era of Middle-earth. It is a grassland which lies north of its ally Gondor and north-west of Mordor, the realm of Sauron, their enemy (see maps of Middle-earth). It is inhabited by the Rohirrim, a people of herdsmen and farmers who are well-known for their horses and cavalry.

They were nine Men who succumbed to Sauron’s power and attained near-immortality as wraiths, servants bound to the power of the One Ring. They are first mentioned in The Lord of the Rings, originally published in 1954–1955. The book calls the Nazgûl Sauron’s “most terrible servants.

Minas Tirith, originally named Minas Anor, is a fictional city in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth writings. It became the heavily fortified capital of Gondor in the second half of the Third Age. It was originally built to guard the former capital, Osgiliath, from attack from the west, but became the capital when Osgiliath fell into ruin following the Kin-Strife and the Great Plague. It is often referred to as the White City and the City of Kings. The Rohirrim sometimes translated this into their own language as “the Mundburg”. In the climax of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien’s most famous book, the city comes under a very large and determined attack by the allied forces of Mordor.

Gimli was a member of Durin’s Folk who volunteered to accompany Frodo Baggins as a member of the Fellowship of the Ring on the quest to destroy the One Ring. He was an honourable, wise, and stalwart warrior, favouring the axe as his weapon.

Gimli became deeply enamoured upon meeting the Elf-lady Galadriel, and forged a friendship with the Elf Legolas despite his original hostility (due to the fact that Legolas’ father had once incarcerated his own father); these relationships aided greatly in the rehabilitation of the long-weak relationship between the Elves and the Dwarves of Middle-earth.

Gil-galad was the last High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth. In early texts, he was the son of Fingon the Valiant, son of Fingolfin, son of Finwë, first High King of the Noldor. Other sources and versions of the text however, indicate Gil-galad is the Son of Orodreth of the House of Finarfin. This would make him grandson of Angrod — who is brother of Finrod Felagund and Galadriel. It is through this descent that his High-kingship of the Noldor is explained.
